Trails | Adopt a Trail | Map of Trails

All trails have been built for hiking and mountain biking. These trails are built purposely narrow (12 to 18 inches wide) for low environmental impact.

Click here for more information regarding the Adopt-a-trail program at Mountwood Park. Friends of Mountwood Park, Inc. continues to build partnerships with groups to maintain its 19 trails, and we need your help.

5. Qwick Out: Another easy access to Trip To The Moon
6. Apollo 13: Can't quite make the final trip to the Moon? This trail will bypass it.

Adopt a Trail

We believe in community-based programs, and  we encourage clubs, businesses, families or groups of friends to adopt a trail at Mountwood Park.

Friends of Mountwood Park, Inc. continues to build partnerships with groups to maintain its 19 trails, and we need your help.

For individuals or families to be approved to Adopt-A-Trail, they must call (304)679-3611 to begin the AAT process.

Groups must meet the following criterion:

  • Commitment to maintain the trail for 1 to 3 years and with sufficient manpower

  • Submit an application

  • Be approved by Friends of Mountwood Park, Inc.

  • Once approved, submit appropriate forms on all group members before you begin your work

  • Submit quarterly maintenance forms of your trail work and hours of service

Adopt-A-Trail Safety:

Safety is the most important consideration while working on the trail. There is always the potential for accidents while using trail maintenance tools in the woods. Maintainers need to be constantly aware of these dangers. Trail maintainers have found over the years that the best way to work safely is simple: use common sense. The following is a good common sense checklist:

  • Let someone know where you are
  • Carry a small first aid kit
  • Wear a good pair of work gloves to protect your hands
  • Wear long pants, even in summer, when working in brush
  • Be certain that all tool heads and handles are tight with no cracks
  • Wear sturdy leather boots when digging or using cutting tools
  • Carry tools on the trail safely
  • Wear blaze orange colors when working during hunting season
