Go back in time and experience the history of where the oil and gas industry began during the annual Volcano Days Festival!

Nestled among the hills and valleys approximately 12 miles east of Parkersburg, West Virginia lies what is now the extinct community - the town of Volcano, West Virginia.

Volcano was an oil town located in the third greatest oil field to be discovered in the United States. One historian claims that the town got its name when the drillers struck riches at about 100 feet beneath the surface and the oil came in "like a volcano".

At one time Volcano resembled a gold rush town and at its peak, consisted of stores, hotels, saloons, an opera house, homes, churches, two schools, a post office and its own newspaper.

Its downfall began in 1879 when a fire broke out and burned almost every building in town. Today the area has reverted back to nature and is home to Mountwood Park.

Join us the third Friday - Monday in September and enjoy a variety of activities including historical lectures, a flea market, arts and crafts and live entertainment! Not to mention the "Almost Famous" chicken dinner!

Download your applications for Volcano Days and mail it in with checks made payable to Mountwood Park.

We look forward to seeing you at this years Volcano Days!
